These Chocolate Matcha cupcakes are the perfect way to indulge with no guilt! The way I see it: Green tea is healthy, therefore these cupcakes are too!
Last year, my husband came home with a super expensive (and very tiny) tin of Matcha. Little by little, I started seeing matcha lattes take over my Instagram feed and somehow felt curious about it, so I decided to give it a try! To be honest, I hated it! During the summer, I decided to try the very popular Starbucks color drinks and ended up getting the green drink with matcha tea on it. After that, I tried Matcha Ice cream. And by then I already knew that I was obsessed with anything Matcha (as long as it is not a hot drink)!
After seeing different recipes using Matcha on them, I decided that I needed to give this a try! I decided that the best way to start was with some delicious cupcakes. I made my favorite chocolate cake recipe which includes my go-to chocolate powder (Droste Cocoa Powder). I first found out about it during my trip to Holland, and even though I had tried their chocolates before, I did not know they also made chocolate powder! Glady, it is very easy to find in the US and always have it in my pantry.
After preparing the first part of my chocolate matcha cupcakes, I started working on the frosting! I first mixed the Matcha powder with a tablespoon of boiling milk, to make a paste and prevent bitter clumps. After this, I added the paste to my usual frosting recipe. Super easy! But the most fun was seeing how the mix turned green without using any dyes. I realized then that this was a great way of making colored cupcakes with no need for artificial coloring.
My new favorite cupcakes!
These cupcakes turned out delicious! The matcha flavor is not too strong, so this would also be a great recipe for kids. And because of its green color, it is also an amazing Halloween cupcake! I added a few sugar eyes to make an even spookier treat, but you will have to wait till Halloween to see those pictures!
