After seeing these beautiful clay dishes over at A Beautiful Mess, I knew I had to give this clay/ marble technique a try. The one problem was that I really did not need a new ring dish… but I was in desperately need of some new coasters! So I decided to give this a try…in coasters shape!
The materials are exactly the same that for the ring dish. Even the distribution of the colors is the same! I wanted my coasters to be more white, so I used double the amount. I bought 4 Sculpey bars in white, 1 black, 1 silver, 1 dark blue and 1 light blue. All the steps are the same as the DIY tutorial shared at A Beautiful Mess. Because I was doing coasters, I used the upper part of a SOLO cup to take the measurement and trace the circle. The best part of doing this is that you can just throw it afterwards, and there is less stuff to clean!
An important tip is to not smooth the ball of clay, as it will mess the marble effect. I accidentally ended up having one coaster looking like a big grey mess! Also, because I do not want to have sculpted waste, I made more coasters out of the leftovers parts. This gave an around 3 extra coasters, ending up with a total of 9 coasters!
The final look is not perfect, but it would be a great project for kids and it definitely beats the price of those beautiful agate stone coasters available at stores!
